The work of Anselm Reyle is intimately linked to Modernism: borrowing, critiquing, and reinventing conventions all at once. Characteristics of his works are various found objects that have been removed from their original function, altered visually and recontextualized. Remnants of consumer society, discarded materials, symbols of urbanity, and industrial change play a central role in his works. He is one of few contemporary German painters examining the lessons of abstraction and their place in contemporary painting at a moment when figurative painting has gained critical momentum.
Born in Tübingen 1970, Anselm Reyle studied at the State Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. He has been living and working in Berlin since 1997 and since 2009 has held a position as a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. His works have been shown in numerous institutional solo exhibitions, including the Deichtorhallen Hamburg (2012), the Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2012), The Arken Museum of Modern Art, Ishoj (2011), Des Moines Art Center, Iowa (2011), Kunsthalle Tübingen (2009), and Kunsthalle Zürich (2006).
